As described on the home page for English Movies, the 1960s marked the beginning of ‘New Hollywood’, also known as the ‘American new wave’ cinema, which continued into the 1970s.  During this period, the movie industry went through a major transition, with the emergence of more creative and realistic methods of making movies.  This set the stage for the contemporary style of filmmaking in Modern Hollywood, so I have termed the transition period of the 1960s and 1970s as the ‘Middle Period’.

This section covers the films of many of the notable directors of the Hollywood Middle Period.  The links above (listed in alphabetical order) will take you to the collected works of these directors.  The male stars and female stars from the same period are covered in two companion sections.
