The movie lists for the various luminaries of Hollywood provide a fascinating look at the history of the film industry itself.  As described on the main page for English movies on this site, this history can be broken down into five different eras.  For the purpose of grouping the luminaries, I have consolidated the five different eras into three periods:

  • Classic Hollywood (1920s to 1950s): combines the Studio Era and the Post-Studio Era.
  • Middle Period/New Hollywood (1960s & 1970s): the transition period when a new style of movie making called the ‘American New Wave’ emerged.
  • Modern Hollywood (1980s & beyond): combines the Home Video Era with the Modern Era.

There are two types of luminaries covered here: artistes (male/female stars and character actors) and filmmakers (directors).  The category of character actors (and actresses) represents those highly talented performers who may not have the usual glitz and glamor of Hollywood stars but whose versatility enables them to play unusual or interesting characters in supporting roles and whose impact in many movies is often as large as that of the main stars.

The various groups of performers and directors are divided according to the periods during which the stars or filmmakers made their debut or established themselves.  Click on any artiste or filmmaker below for the link to their collected works.

Classic Hollywood (1920s to 1950s)

Hollywood Middle Period (1960s & 1970s)

Modern Hollywood (1980s & beyond)

Note: Clint Eastwood has a different list as an actor from the one as a director.
