Dev Anand in his book Romancing with Life, has narrated the impact of both Major Verma and Captain Anand’s roles on common Indian man.
During his visit to an army hospital Dev Anand met a jawan whose leg had been amputated. The soldier told him with great pride, ‘I still have one leg to walk on’, refering to Major Verma’s famous line from the film. The doctor attending jawan later told Dev Anand that he found this jawan’s morale boosted after meeting him.
The philosophy of Captain Anand also touched the hearts of the people when he sang:
Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya
Har fiqr ko dhuein mein udaata chala gaya
Public took inspiration from these lines, which were so stirringly written by Sahir Ludhianvi and beautifully sung by Mohd Rafi.
Recently after watching Sam Bahadur, my friend asked me ‘Didn’t Vicky Kaushal act like Dev Anand?’ One can imagine the impact created by Dev Anand 62 years ago in Hum Dono as Major Verma, with his mannerisms and moustache resembling the way Vicky Kaushal portrayed Gen Sam Manekshaw in this movie.
