As the Golden Age of Hindi Movies came to an end, the old guard of filmmakers began to phase out.  Taking their place was a new breed of filmmakers who began to establish their presence in the 1980s, among them Mahesh Bhatt, Subhash Ghai, Rakesh Roshan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.  Although both Subhash Ghai and Mahesh Bhatt had actually made their directorial debuts in the 1970s, they broke out as highly successful filmmakers in the 1980s.  Mahesh Bhatt was later joined in the 1990s by his younger brother Mukesh Bhatt, and together the two brothers have been very successful filmmakers, both individually and in partnership.

The 1990s saw the debut of three highly talented filmmakers: Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.  The first two had the advantage of strong family pedigrees in the art of making movies, and their respective directorial debuts were two of the most successful films of all time: Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.  (In fact these films are so well known that they are generally referred to by their initials DDLJ and KKHH.)  In addition to their directorial accomplishments, Aditya and Karan have also produced many films directed by others, under the auspices of the production companies established by their fathers: Yash Raj Films and Dharma Productions.

This prolific group of producers/directors have collectively created an extraordinary collection of high-quality Hindi movies, and some of them continue to add to their body of work.  The links above (listed in alphabetical order) will take you to the collected works of these filmmakers.
