The beginning of the Golden Age of Hindi Movies saw the rise of the first non-singing female stars of Hindi cinema: Madhubala and Nargis.  Although they all made their debut in the mid-1940s, by the start of the 1950s they had cemented their dominance, which continued for another decade or so. Later in the 1950s, other major stars emerged whose impact was felt more in the 1960s and beyond: Asha Parekh, Mala Sinha, Meena Kumari, Nutan, Vyjayantimala, Waheeda Rehman

These incredibly talented and prolific artistes collectively produced an extraordinary collection of performances which will last through the ages.  The links above (listed in alphabetical order) will take you to the collected works of these performers.  Other female stars who made their debut in the latter part of the Golden Age (1961-1980) are covered in a companion section.
