The movie lists for the various luminaries of the Hindi film industry provide a fascinating look at the history of the industry itself.  As described on the main page for Hindi movies on this site, this history can be broken down into five different eras.  Of these, the Golden Age (1949-1980) was the period when the Hindi film industry truly broke out and established itself as a worldwide phenomenon.  This was primarily due to the contributions of a large number of luminaries (performers and movie makers) who created an amazing body of work whose quality and creativity may never again be equaled.  Hence, the bulk of the Hindi movie luminaries covered in this section are from the Golden Age (divided into two subsections), though about a third of the luminaries are from the subsequent eras which I have combined together into a ‘Post-Golden Age’ subsection.

There are two types of luminaries covered here: artistes (male and female leads) and filmmakers (producers & directors).  There is also a special category of ‘character actors‘ (both good guys and villains) that was unique to the Golden Age, during which there was a lot of typecasting of well-known actors.  The various groups of performers and producers/directors are divided according to the periods during which the stars or filmmakers made their debut or established themselves.  Click on any artiste or filmmaker below for the link to their collected works.

Notes: (1) Each group of luminaries is listed in alphabetical order by first name. (2) For consistency in the lists, the stars are listed by their original names when they made their debut (e.g., ‘Jaya Bhaduri’ instead of ‘Jaya Bachchan’; ‘Ajay Devgan’ instead of ‘Ajay Devgn’).
