Our Army at War, published by DC Comics, has a rich and influential publication history that began in the 1950s.  Soon, it became a showcase for the adventures of Sgt. Rock, its most popular character and indeed one of the most famous comic-book war heroes of all time.  The character first appeared in Our Army at War #83 in 1959 and quickly became one of DC’s most beloved characters.  The series (which was renamed Sgt. Rock in its later years) lasted until 1988 and has been revived multiple times; however, in the interests of brevity, I have listed the Sgt. Rock comics only until early 1970.

The two pivotal figures in developing the Sgt. Rock character were writer Robert Kanigher and artist Joe Kubert, who co-created the character in the late 1950s and collaborated on nearly every Sgt. Rock story for over a decade, continuing their contributions off and on until the end of the comic’s run in 1988.  Kanigher’s storytelling skills brought depth and authenticity to the war narratives, while Kubert’s gritty and realistic artwork captured the intensity and brutality of the battlefield.  Together, the vivid illustrations and the emotionally resonant stories enabled the readers to experience the human side of war and elevated the series to new heights.  The amazing work of Kanigher and Kubert made Sgt. Rock a celebrated figure in the war comic genre and a beloved character in the DC Comics universe.
