Space Family Robinson was a Gold Key comic book about a family marooned in space, along the lines of the classic novel Swiss Family Robinson. The comic series made its debut in 1962 and immediately captivated readers with its thrilling science-fiction storytelling, transporting its audience to the outer reaches of the galaxy. (It was also linked to the popular TV show Lost in Space, which became a subtitle of later issues of the comic book.) The series followed the interstellar adventures of the Robinson family, who became stranded on a distant planet after their spaceship was thrown off course. The comics depicted the family’s efforts to survive in their new environment while facing alien creatures, exploring uncharted territories and seeking a way to return to Earth.
The principal contributors to the Space Family Robinson comic series were writers Del Connell and Gaylord Du Bois and artist Dan Spiegle. The comic books featured vibrant artwork depicting alien landscapes, bizarre creatures and futuristic technology through vivid illustrations that captured readers’ imagination. Additionally, the stories presented a strong emphasis on family dynamics and teamwork, showcasing the Robinsons’ resilience, ingenuity and the bonds that held them together in the face of adversity. The comics often featured serialized storytelling, with ongoing storylines and character development that kept readers invested in the Robinson family’s journey. During the 1960s, the Space Family Robinson comics enchanted young readers with thrilling space adventures and a sense of wonder as they explored the vastness of the cosmos.
