The Gold Key comic title Ripley’s Believe It or Not: True Ghost Stories had a 15-year publication history starting in 1965 and showcased the incredible and bizarre stories presumably collected by Robert Ripley and his research team. Although they are of doubtful authenticity, this does not make them any less enjoyable. Inspired by Ripley’s popular newspaper feature, the comics adapted his unique brand of “strange but true” tales into a visually captivating format. Each issue featured a collection of oddities, freak occurrences and extraordinary ghost stories. The comics included accounts of bizarre animals, reincarnation, strange cultural practices and mind-boggling feats of human strength and endurance. These stories appealed to readers’ curiosity and sense of wonder, offering a glimpse into the fascinating and extraordinary aspects of our world.
The Ripley’s Believe It or Not comics had a distinctive art style. The series presented the stories in a visually dynamic manner, employing detailed and vibrant artwork to capture the essence of the bizarre and unbelievable. The artists skillfully depicted the peculiar events and extraordinary individuals, bringing them to life on the pages. Often, additional content was included, such as the Ripley team’s commentary, notes and capsules of lesser-known facts and trivia, inviting readers to test their knowledge of the strange and unusual. All these features combined to make Ripley’s Believe It or Not comics a diverting experience for curious readers and fans of the extraordinary.
