The House of Secrets, published by DC Comics, has a rich publication history that has captivated readers for decades. The comic series first debuted in 1956 during the Silver Age of comics and quickly became known for its thrilling mystery and fantasy stories. However, it was the second run of The House of Secrets which began in 1969 that truly solidified its place in comic book history. This iteration of the series focused primarily on horror stories, capitalizing on the growing popularity of the genre at the time. There was also a companion series called The House of Mystery that was introduced around the same time, but since it has very similar stories to The House of Secrets, I have chosen not to include it on this site.
During the second run of The House of Secrets, the comic introduced a host of memorable characters and stories that have become classics in the horror genre. One of the most notable features of this era was the introduction of the character Abel as the primary host of the series. Abel, a reanimated corpse, served as the perfect guide for readers as he shared spine-chilling tales of terror from the mysterious house. The House of Secrets presented a number of memorable story arcs, including the introduction of the character Swamp Thing, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. This storyline marked the first appearance of the iconic character, who would go on to have his own successful series and become a beloved figure in the DC Universe. With its gripping stories and memorable characters, the second run of The House of Secrets cemented its status as a must-read for horror enthusiasts and comic book fans alike.
