Marvel Comics’ Thor has a rich publication history that dates back to August 1962 when he first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83.  Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby, the character is based on the Norse god of thunder, and right from his introduction he become a staple of the Marvel Universe.  Journey into Mystery was retitled Thor starting with issue #126 of the title.

Over the years, Thor has been written by some of the most well-known names in comic book history, including Walter Simonson, Gerry Conway and Len Wein.  Each writer put their unique spin on the character, bringing new dimensions to his mythos, relationships, and struggles.  One of the most celebrated runs on Thor came from writer-artist Walter Simonson in the 1980s.  During his tenure, Simonson introduced new villains like Beta Ray Bill while also exploring Thor’s relationship with his family and his duties as the god of thunder.

Many annuals and graphic novels featuring Thor have also been published.  Thor is a founding member of the Avengers.  The series has been rebooted several times, and Thor has been involved in many Marvel Comics crossover series.  The character and mythology of Thor has continued to evolve over the years, and he remains one of the most enduring Marvel super-heroes.
