Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in 1963, and was created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby.  Iron Man’s secret identity is Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who was wounded and captured during the Vietnam War and subsequently created a suit of powered armor to escape.  Iron Man’s suit not only helped him escape, but also provided him with superhuman strength, flight, and a variety of weapons.  Starting with issue #58, Iron Man shared the Tales of Suspense title with Captain America, but after issue #99, Iron Man got his own title in 1968.

Iron Man has had many iconic writers and artists throughout his publication history.  In the early years, Stan Lee wrote the character’s adventures and Don Heck did the artwork.  In the 1970s, the character was taken over by other writers and artists such as Archie Goodwin, Mike Fredrich, Bob Layton, David Michelinie and John Romita, Jr., who who introduced new villains and storylines and took the character in a new direction.  One of the notable contributions of the last three creators listed was the famous Demon in a Bottle storyline, which dealt with Tony Stark’s alcoholism.

Many annuals and graphic novels featuring Iron Man have been published, and the series has been rebooted several times.  Iron Man is a founding member of the Avengers and has played a prominent role in many major Marvel Comics crossover events, such as the Civil War storyline in the 2000s.  Iron Man’s popularity has also led to multiple adaptations in other media, most notably several successful films starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark.
