The Fantastic Four first appeared in November 1961 in issue #1 of their eponymous title.  They were jointly created by the legendary duo Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  The Fantastic Four, consisting of Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing, were Marvel’s first superhero team and have become one of its most enduring franchises.

Lee and Kirby went on to collaborate on the series for the next decade, introducing iconic characters such as Doctor Doom, the Silver Surfer, and the Black Panther.  Other notable writers and artists who have worked on the series over the years include Roy Thomas, Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, as well as John Byrne who had a celebrated run as writer-artist during the 1980s which breathed new life into the series.

Many annuals and graphic novels featuring the Fantastic Four have been published.  The series has been rebooted several times, and the team has also been involved in many major Marvel Comics crossover events, such as the Civil War storyline in the 2000s.  Despite several ups and downs in popularity over the years, the Fantastic Four remains a popular and influential part of the Marvel Universe.
