Captain America is one of the most iconic superheroes in the Marvel Universe, first appearing in Captain America Comics #1 in 1941.  Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character quickly became a symbol of American patriotism and resilience during World War II.  After the war, the character’s popularity waned, and the series was cancelled in the 1950s.  However, Captain America was revived in 1964 by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in Avengers #4, and he has remained a staple of the Marvel Universe ever since.  The character, fondly known as “Cap”, started appearing jointly with Iron Man in Tales of Suspense starting with issue #58, and four years later the title became Captain America (issue #100 in 1968).

Over the years, Captain America has been written and illustrated by some of the most prominent names in the comic book industry.  In the 1970s, Steve Englehart and Sal Buscema took over the series, exploring themes of political corruption and social injustice.  The series has been rebooted many times since the 1990s.  In recent years, Captain America has been reimagined by writers such as Ed Brubaker, who delved into the character’s past as a frozen relic of World War II.

Many annuals and graphic novels featuring Captain America have been published.  Captain America was one of the earliest members of the Avengers and he played a key role in many major Marvel Comics crossover events, such as the Civil War storyline in the 2000s.  One of the most controversial storylines was Two Americas (2010), which delved deeper into politics than would be expected in a comic book.  Through all these changes, Captain America has remained a symbol of hope and courage in the face of adversity, inspiring readers around the world.
