Marvel Comics’ Avengers team first appeared in 1963 and was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.  The original lineup of the team consisted of Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, and the Hulk.  The team was formed to combat the threat of Loki, the Norse god of mischief, and quickly became a cornerstone of the Marvel Universe.  Over the years, the Avengers have had a rotating roster of heroes, including Captain America, Black Panther, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Vision and many others.  The team has faced off against a wide variety of memorable villains, including Ultron, Thanos and Kang the Conqueror.

The Avengers have had a long and storied publication history, with many talented writers and artists contributing to the series.  In addition to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, some of the notable contributors to the series have been Roy Thomas, Don Heck, John Buscema, Jim Shooter, Roger Stern and Brian Michael Bendis.  Each of these creators brought their own unique perspective to the team, resulting in a diverse array of storylines and characterizations.

Many annuals and graphic novels featuring the Avengers have been published, and the series has been rebooted several times.  The Avengers have been a centerpiece of many Marvel Comics crossover events, such as the Civil War storyline in the 2000s. The enduring popularity of the Avengers has led to many successful Hollywood movies which are among the biggest box-office hits of all time.
