Richie Rich (“the Poor Little Rich Boy”) was first published by Harvey Comics in 1953 as a backup feature in Little Dot #1.  The striking features of the character were his extreme wealth and extravagant lifestyle, as well as his generosity and kindness.  It took seven more years before Richie got his own Harvey title in 1960, but his popularity grew rapidly and he became Harvey’s most successful character, eventually being featured in over 50 different titles.  The flagship title Richie Rich ran from 1960 to 1991, followed by a second series that ran from 1991 to 1994.

The Richie Rich comic books were known for their humor, vibrant artwork, and imaginative stories that often included elements of comedy, adventure, and science fiction.  The comics often center around Richie’s adventures with his friends and family and his efforts to use his wealth to help others.  The contributors to the series included many notable artists and writers, including the legendary Warren Kremer, who co-created the character and worked on it for over 20 years.  Other notable artists who worked the series include Sid Jacobson and Ken Selig.

The stories often feature recurring characters such as Richie’s parents, his loyal butler Cadbury, his best friend Gloria and his obnoxious cousin Reggie.  Richie Rich’s popularity led to numerous spin-off series, including Richie Rich Dollars and Cents, Richie Rich Millions and Richie Rich Success Stories.  He also made frequent appearances in many other Harvey Comics publications as well as in other media, cementing his place as an enduring icon of the comic-book industry.  Richie Rich remains an enduring character in popular culture and a favorite of comic book readers of all ages.  A cover gallery of Richie Rich comics can be found here.
