Little Audrey was created as a cartoon character by Famous Studios in the 1940s.  She was depicted as a curious and mischievous little girl who often gets into trouble, but always manages to come out on top.  Little Audrey quickly gained a following thanks to her charming personality and relatable stories, and began to be featured in comics published by St. John Publications.  In 1952, Harvey Comics acquired the rights to the character and started a long series of comic books titled Little Audrey at first and restarted in 1957 as Playful Little Audrey.  It was around this time that the ‘definitive’ Audrey came into being, taking on her signature red dress and best-known appearance.

In most of her stories, Audrey appeared with her friend and occasional adversary Melvin, a prankish ‘frenemy’.  A new series titled Little Audrey & Melvin was launched in 1962 and continued for over 10 years.  Both the original and new series featured the two characters in whimsical and playful stories, which often included elements of fantasy and adventure.  One of the spin-off comics from the main title was Little Audrey TV Funtime Little Audrey was the best known of Harvey’s female characters in the 1950s before her popularity was eclipsed in the 1960s by the company’s other female characters Little Dot, Little Lotta and Wendy the Good Little Witch.  A cover gallery of Little Audrey comics can be found here: 1st series, 2nd series.
