Casper (“the Friendly Ghost”) is a beloved American comic book and animated character, known for his innocent and gentle nature.  He was created by Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo, and was first published in comics form in 1949 by St. John Publications.  His first appearance in Harvey Comics was as a backup feature in Little Audrey in 1952.  Shortly thereafter he got his own Harvey comic book, which quickly became one of their most successful titles.  The original series Casper the Friendly Ghost lasted until 1958, when for some inexplicable reason it was ended and a new series The Friendly Ghost Casper was started.  The Casper comics were written and drawn by many notable cartoonists including the legendary Warren Kremer, who illustrated the character for over 20 years.

The Casper comics were known for their sweet and lighthearted stories, which centered around the friendly ghost’s efforts to make friends and help people.  Supporting characters in the Casper comics included Casper’s uncles, the Ghostly Trio, his friend Wendy the good witch, his mischievous cousin Spooky and the ghost horse Nightmare.  These characters were often featured in backup stories in the Casper comic-book.  Spin-off comics from the main title included Casper’s Ghostland, Casper & The Ghostly Trio, Casper & Nightmare, and TV Casper & Company.  The Casper comics became incredibly popular and helped establish Casper as one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in popular culture.  A cover gallery of Casper comics can be found here: 1st series, 2nd series.
