Woody Woodpecker is a classic animated character created by Walter Lantz in 1940.  The character was featured in numerous cartoons and became an instant hit with audiences.  In the early 1940s, Woody Woodpecker began to appear in comic books published by Dell Comics, starting with The Funnies/New Funnies, then in a number of Four Color Comics, and eventually getting his own Dell title in 1952.  The stories featured Woody in his signature antics such as outwitting his enemies and causing mischief.  The Dell series continued until 1962, at which point it was picked up by Gold Key Comics.  The Gold Key series continued until 1983 (the last few being published under the Whitman brand) and featured new and reprinted stories featuring Woody Woodpecker and his friends.

Major contributors to the Woody Woodpecker comic series include writer Carl Fallberg and artists Dick Hall, John Carey and Bill Weaver.  The series showcased Woody’s humorous and mischievous personality, and also introduced new supporting characters like Buzz Buzzard and Gabby Gator, as well as Knothead and Splinter (his nephew and niece).  Throughout its publication history, the Woody Woodpecker comics maintained the same charm and humor as the animated cartoons, making it a popular series among fans of all ages.  Today, Woody Woodpecker remains a beloved character and a testament to the creative genius of Walter Lantz.  A cover gallery of Woody Woodpecker comics can be found here.
