Neal Adams was one of the most incredible artists that ever worked at DC, being most active in the late Silver Age and the early Bronze Age.  His artwork was simply stunning, and he specialized in drawing comic-book covers which simply grabbed your attention.  He started his career at DC working on a relatively obscure title but nevertheless made a big splash, as described below.

In the late 1960s, the Brave and the Bold comics which had previously featured rotating teams of DC super-heroes became an exclusive showcase for Batman, who was now paired with a variety of DC characters (not all of whom were super-heroes).  These comics were a great vehicle for the new kid on the block Neal Adams to display his talents, and his spectacular work on The Brave and the Bold did not go unnoticed by various senior editors at DC, including Julius Schwartz.

Schwartz recruited Neal Adams to work on Batman and to help change his look yet again to revive the character’s flagging fortunes, and he also roped in another whiz kid at DC to work with Adams: writer Denny O’Neil.  The first Adams-O’Neil collaboration, Detective #395, forever changed the tone of Batman stories and also gave Batman the modern version of the dark, brooding look with which he had started his career.  Together, Adams and O’Neil produced some of the most striking Batman stories ever written and they set the stage for Batman’s permanent return to being a creature of the night and his transformation into the Dark Knight.
