Carmine Infantino was second only to Julius Schwartz in his influence on launching Batman’s “New Look” in 1964.  Schwartz and Infantino had previously been instrumental in launching a revamped Flash with their collaboration on Showcase #4, which marked the start of DC’s Silver Age.  Starting with his first Batman issue Detective #327, which had a striking cover and great interior art as well, Infantino produced some truly memorable art on Batman over the next few years, in partnership with inker Joe Giella.

Infantino was a consummate comic-book cover artist who drew many remarkable covers for both Batman Comics and Detective Comics until 1967, when he was appointed editorial director for DC Comics.  Although he did not draw many interior stories, he drew nearly every cover for both Batman titles during this period.  It is no exaggeration to say that Infantino’s revamping of the Batman look and his eye-catching covers played a huge role in turning Batman’s fortunes around and positioning the character for the spectacular success on TV and elsewhere from that point on.

Carmine Infantino was such a master cover artist that nearly every Batman story of this period started life with a cover that he had created, and then Julius Schwartz assigned a team of writers to build stories around the scene depicted on the cover.  It became almost a game between Infantino and Schwartz, where the former would drop a way-out cover on the latter’s desk with a challenge: “Solve this!”  According to Infantino, Schwartz’s did end up solving every challenging cover that was presented to him.  A great example of two geniuses bringing out the best in each other!
