This is a selection of Pre-1900 adventure books & stories written by various authors (with GEMs highlighted).  The list includes links for several associated items which may be available online for each book: (a) Wikipedia page, (b) e-book, and (c) audiobook.  There is also a column called “More info” with links to optional posts on each book.

Note that the list is sortable by each column. (Multiple levels of sorting are possible by sorting more than one column in succession, from lowest to highest.)  You can also do an instant filtering of the table by entering a character string in the ‘Search’ field.

There are several different types of books covered in this section: (a) traditional adventure stories, (b) biographical novels or travelogues, (c) historical fiction, and (d) mythology and folklore.  It is interesting to note about the last category that the adventure motif can be found in some really ancient works which were written even before the printing press was invented, such as The Odyssey and Le Morte d’Arthur.

Some writers of the 19th century were masters of the adventure story: Sir Walter Scott, Alexandre Dumas and Robert Louis Stevenson.  Then there were popular science-fiction writers such as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells who included a healthy dose of adventure in their stories.  (The former also wrote some non-Sci-Fi adventure stories such as the delightful Around the World in Eighty Days.)
