Zorro comics, published by Dell and later Gold Key, brought the adventures of the legendary masked hero to the comic book medium.  Zorro was created as a swashbuckling masked vigilante by Johnston McCulley in a popular 1919 novel.  Three decades later, he made his comic book debut, appearing in many issues of Dell’s Four Color Comics before getting his own Dell title in 1960.  Along the way, the rights to Zorro were acquired by Disney, and the official title of the comic became Walt Disney’s Zorro.  The Dell series ceased publication in 1962, and the only original Zorro comic stories after that appeared in four issues of Walt Disney’s Comics & Stories.  In the mid-1960s, Gold Key started a short-lived run of Zorro comics, comprised entirely of reprints from the Dell series.

Although many notable comic-book creators are said to have contributed their talents to the Zorro comic series, the documentation of the writer and artist credits for most of the issues is sketchy.  Known contributors to Zorro comics included writers Gaylord DuBois and Paul S. Newman, along with artists Alex Toth, Everett Kinstler, Warren Tufts and Nat Edson.  These talented comic-book creators crafted thrilling stories about Zorro’s daring exploits in Old California and brought to life his action-packed swordfights, masked disguises and adventures with his black steed Tornado.  Zorro’s thrilling escapades depicted in the comic books solidified his place in popular culture and ensured the character’s enduring popularity among readers.
