The iconic character of Tarzan, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, made his comic book debut in 1947 in Four Color Comics under the Dell Comics banner and appeared in several issues of that publication before getting his own Dell title in 1948.  The two people who played a pivotal role in shaping the Tarzan comic book series were writer Gaylord DuBois and artist Jesse Marsh.  DuBois, known for his ability to capture the spirit and essence of Burroughs’ creation, crafted thrilling and action-packed stories that showcased Tarzan’s strength, agility and noble nature.  Marsh’s detailed and dynamic artwork brought the lush jungles of Africa and the iconic figure of Tarzan to vibrant life, immersing readers in the world of the Lord of the Jungle.

The Dell series lasted for nearly 15 years and ended in 1962.  The Tarzan comic book was taken over by Gold Key Comics that same year and they continued the Dell comic-book numbering starting with Tarzan #132.  Gaylord DuBois continued scripting the Tarzan stories under the Gold Key banner, initially with his earlier collaborator Jesse Marsh but later with other artists, notably Russ Manning, Doug Wildey and Paul Norris.  The skillful illustrations of these talented artists brought a fresh visual interpretation to the character and his jungle world.  The Gold Key era included the adaptation of many of the popular Tarzan novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs into the comic-book realm.  The Dell and Gold Key comics helped established the Tarzan mythology and solidified his place as a beloved and enduring character in popular culture.
