Wendy (“the Good Little Witch”) was introduced in 1954 as a back-up feature as well as Casper’s companion in Casper #20. The character is a friendly witch who uses her magic powers for good and often helps her friends and family. After a trial as a lead feature in several issues of Harvey Hits (mostly solo appearances), Wendy received her own Harvey title in 1960. The authorship of most of the Wendy stories is not clear, though it is known that Warren Kremer and Howard (‘Howie’) Post both contributed to developing the character.
Wendy lives with the three witches Thelma, Velma and Zelma, with whom she shares a cottage in a haunted forest. Her origin and the story of how she was adopted by the three witches (whom she calls her ‘aunts’) is recounted in Wendy #65. Wendy’s stories often center around her adventures in the world of witches and her attempts to balance her magical abilities with her everyday life. Wendy and Casper often cross over into each other’s comics. Spin-off comics from the main title included Wendy Witch World and Casper & Wendy. Wendy’s friendly nature, magical abilities, and positive message of using her powers for good have made her a beloved character in popular culture and a favorite of comic book readers of all ages.
