Little Lotta was first published by Harvey Comics in 1953 as a backup feature in Little Dot #1 (along with Richie Rich). A couple of years later, she had her own Harvey title, which lasted for over 20 years. The character is known for her enormous weight, incredible strength and insatiable appetite, which often leads to humorous situations. Little Lotta’s stories often center around her love for food and her desire to help others. For the majority of the years that she appeared in comics, she was drawn by Sid Couchey; among other contributors to Little Lotta stories were Howard Post as well as the incredible Harvey artist-writer Warren Kremer.
The Little Lotta stories departed from the ‘unpopular fat kid’ stereotype that was common in other popular media at the time; instead, she was depicted as friendly, kind-hearted and always ready to use her tremendous strength for good. One of the supporting characters in the stories is Little Lotta’s boyfriend Gerald, who in many ways is Lotta’s opposite: a shy, diminutive boy with glasses who is not very strong. Another supporting character who often appeared in Little Lotta stories was Little Dot, the other well-known female character from Harvey. One of the spin-off comics from the main Little Lotta series was Little Lotta in Foodland. A cover gallery of Little Lotta comics can be found here.
