The iconic figure of James Bond (also known by his code name 007) was created and popularized by Ian Fleming in the 1950s and 1960s.  Although Fleming wrote a relatively small number of books, the James Bond character caught fire in the public eye because of his unique qualities as a dashing, colorful spy employed by British intelligence.  The Bond books varied in quality, with some having well-developed plots, villains and supporting characters, while others having flimsy plots or superficial characterization.  Nevertheless, Fleming’s basic formula worked well, and all of the Bond books became bestsellers.

James Bond’s popularity skyrocketed in the 1960s because of his entry into the world of cinema.  Starting with Dr. No in 1962, there has been a continuous string of successful Bond films with spectacular action scenes and memorable characters, and the Bond character is now more successful than ever before.  The four most popular actors who have enacted the role of James Bond are Sean Connery (the first), Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.  The James Bond franchise is firmly entrenched in popular culture and will remain so for a long time to come.
